Sometimes the landscape is so beautiful it tells a unique story. The beautiful thing is the unique story is different to every single person. We caught up with Aaron Dickson who will be exhibiting at the Love Your Home Show Belfast 2018.
Have any other artists been influential in your work?

The Scottish photographer Bruce Percy has been a strong influence. He constantly pushes for the art in photography and finds beauty in the most surprising of places.

What makes your pieces unique?

My recent work tends to be quite muted in terms of colour. I like colour to be quite subtle, so that any one colour doesn’t overpower the rest of the image.

Is there a specific technique that you use?

All my recent work is shot on a 40 year old manual film camera. Using film has pushed my work in a new creative direction where I really have to understand light and tone to get my exposures right.

Do you have a favourite material that you work with?

Working with medium format film is very rewarding, as it makes photography tangible, something I can feel and look at in normal light as opposed to a screen. The film I use produces a positive, so I can view them on a light table before deciding which ones to keep.

What projects are you currently working on?

I’m always thinking ahead and have ideas. Snow in Ireland is very unpredictable, but I’m hoping to get some of the Mourne Mountains in snow this winter.

Do you have a favourite pieces or one that you are most proud of?

My image of Fanad Head in Donegal is a particular favourite. I like how the sea, sand and sky almost blend into each other, making the headland very prominent, despite taking up so little of the image.

Where can we buy your work?

All my work can be ordered online and I have a selection available from the Hallows Gallery in South Belfast.
