This week we visited June of Buttonmoon and were blown away by the quality of product produced here in Northern Ireland. Buttonmoon offers a range of beautiful handmade products from handknits, home accessories, dolls and bespoke baby and children’s wear.
Inspired by pretty colours and delight in co-ordinating beautiful natural fabrics and yarns to create gifts and clothing for your child.

Based in Bangor, County Down creating high quality bespoke products from home. Each piece is individually made by hand from start to finish. This is the best way to ensure quality and create truly bespoke pieces.

What makes your product unique?

I combine two crafts – sewing and hand knitting to create beautiful one-off outfits for babies and children. I only use natural fibres such as cotton, linen, merino, alpaca and silk so that they are breathable, comfortable and sustainable.

What inspires you as an artist/maker?

Colour and print and the cuteness of little people! It’s that simple. I love to put fabrics and yarns together in various combinations to create unique products for wee’ans!

How did you get started?

Oh that’s a tricky one! I was taught to knit from the age of 6years old by my mum and granny. So knitted for a long time! Buttonmoon came about around 4 years ago when my brother died suddenly. I started to sew and knit as therapy really and it helped me through my grief. The name Buttonmoon came about because it rhymes with my name, June. My siblings would tease me as children linking the theme song for the programme Button Moon with me! So it became a pet name as a child.

Why do you think it’s important to keep local?

I strongly believe that community is very important and small local businesses can be the ‘heart’ of a community. My granny had a little corner shop when I was a child and I remember locals popping in for supplies but more importantly a chat or advice! They keep neighbourhoods connected and vibrant.

What motto do you live/work by?

Love, live and laugh in colour!
