After visiting Michael and Mark, The Bearded Candle Makers in Belfast we can confidently say they epitomise creativity in Northern Ireland. The two bearded guys have a huge passion for scent. “We then built our workshop at the bottom of our garden here in Belfast and haven’t looked back since. When our friends call around they love coming out into the workshop as they always say its how they imagine an alchemist’s lab would look like or a wizard’s study!”

These candles are not your typical light up the room candles. A Love Your Home favourite ‘A Real Turf Fire Soy Candle’ is beauty for the nose.  For anyone who has never smelt turf before it is very hard to describe. “If ever there was a scent of Ireland, this must be it. For us, the smell takes us back to our childhoods in Donegal. Its a wooly hug in a can!” say the Bearded Candle Makers.

Q: What makes your product unique?

A: We use stories, places and books for inspiration for all our scents. We find that the scents we create really resonate with people by using this idea.

Q: What inspires you as an artist/maker?

A: I am very inspired by the West of Ireland, so much of our scents are inspired by our favourite memories of our trips there.

Q: How did you get started?

A: I have always been passionate about scent. All my old school books are filled with stories about smells! Since then I have studied natural perfumery and use those skills and my natural curiosity to drive me.

Q: Why do you think it’s important to keep local?

A: Buying from local businesses allow us to connect our spending to real people. I find that people who buy something locally made get so much more satisfaction from their purchase.

Q: What motto do you live/work by?

A: “Dont quit your day dream.”

Extend the life of your candle

“We love using soy wax for our candles because it is clean burning, sustainable and fantastic for candles. It burns slowly and holds onto the scent until the very end of the candle’s life. There are a few things you can do to help extend the life of your candle….”

  1. The first time you burn your candle, its very important to keep it lit until the whole surface is liquid wax. When you burn it thereafter it will burn down evenly and slower.
  2. When burning after the initial burn, try and burn for a minimum of 45 minutes and no longer than 3 hours.
  3. Keep your wick trimmed to 5mm and if it ‘mushrooms’ nip the top off. This helps control the size of the flame so as not to burn too fast.
  4. Use a snuffer to extinguish your candle, blowing it out can cause some of the wick to drop into the wax and slightly damage the wick.
  5. If soot forms on the inside of the tin, extinguish candle, wait for it to cool, then wipe with a damp cloth. Trim wick and relight.
Why do we use soy wax and where does it come from?

‘The soy wax we use comes from sustainable soy farms in America. Many soy farms from other parts of the world are destroying rain forests to grow soy crops. Our soy suppliers are all family run farms with sustainable agriculture at their core. They are also Kosher certified farms to ensure they all meet the highest industry standards for hygiene and safety.

By choosing soy you are choosing to help support the environment as it is a healthily renewable resource as it can be replaced at the same rate and faster than it can be consumed. It is continually producible without damaging the ecosystem in which it is grown. Finally it is completely biodegradable.

Our soy candles contains NO: Palm wax, beeswax, petroleum, paraffin, pesticides OR herbicides. Guaranteed.

Paraffin wax is the enemy! Paraffin is a petroleum by-product. Initially this begins life as a grey/black sludge which is left behind after the refinery process in petroleum factories. This is then chemically bleached to make it into an appealing colour then a host of carcinogenic chemicals and solidifying agents are added.’
